INSTRUCTORS

EXPECTATIONS FOR INSTRUCTORS

  1. Example: Instructors are being watched closely by adults and children. Not only should you maintain humility, but you must set the example in everything you do. Even your body language is important. Don't lean against the walls, or look like you are being lazy. Speak to each person with respect. Never be dismissive.
  2. Hygiene: Your uniform and clothing must be clean and in good repair. You must shower before and after every class if at all possible. This includes kids classes and private lessons. There will be some times where you have no choice but to teach classes back to back. If this is the case, it becomes especially important to come to class showered and ready to go. When possible, go home and shower and come back between classes. You may need to change uniforms part way through. Wash your uniform between every use. Have mints available for oral hygiene as well. You may chew gum, but not on the mats.
  3. Punctuality: You must be at least 20 minutes early to every group class, and 15 minutes early to every private lesson. This time is to prepare the academy for classes. Make sure everything is clean and ready to go. Organize any equipment you will need and be sure you know what you are teaching and how. "Winging it" is not acceptable. I strongly suggest that you cycle the laundry and put on your uniform first. Start and end every class precisely on time. Begin lining the class up one-minute before starting time.
  4. Engagement: You are expected to participate in every warmup and activity we do, unless you are injured and unable to do so. Sometimes a parent or student will need help, and that is fine, but whenever possible, you are either training or teaching. Do not sit or stand in the waiting area and then join the class late unless absolutely necessary. If you must eat, stock something like granola bars or protein shakes and eat them in the back during the break. It is unacceptable to sit in the waiting room, eating a seven course meal in front of students and spectators.
  5. Teaching: Every second on the mats should be spent teaching and learning. Instructors should be moving around the room, going from student to student, correcting errors and giving positive feedback. This should all be done in a positive and loving way. There should be no "down time" at all.
  6. After Class: Instructors should lead the way in cleaning after class. If someone needs help, make sure the cleaning is being taken care of and then move to the student. Before leaving everything should be swept, sprayed, garbages taken out, etc. Everything you have taken out should be put away, including uniforms that have been tried on.

Also - let's make sure private lessons are scheduled to end at least 15 minutes before class begins.
